Futsal is a scaled-down variant of association football played between two teams of five players each on a smaller court. Originating in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1930, it was created by physical education teacher Juan Carlos Ceriani as an indoor version of football for YMCAs. The sport emphasizes ball control and passing in small spaces, and is used by coaches to develop association football players. Futsal is most popular in South America and the Iberian Peninsula, where professional teams exist, while it remains primarily amateur or recreational elsewhere.

Futsal started in 1930 in Montevideo, Uruguay, when Juan Carlos Ceriani created a version of indoor football for YMCAs. Originally developed for basketball courts, a rule book was published in September 1933. Ceriani combined principles from association football with rules from basketball (five players per team, 40 active minutes), water polo (goalkeeping rules), hockey (substitution rules), and handball (field and goal sizes). The YMCA spread the game quickly throughout South America, and João Lotufo brought it to Brazil. In 1956, rules were modified in São Paulo to allow seniors to compete, and a book of Brazilian Indoor Football Rules was published.
